The Power of Keeping It Simple, Monochromatic, and Natural

Designs using all black, white, cream, and natural wood colors can be glamorous, romantic, shabby chic, and even modern, depending on what materials are used and how they are put together. This chapter highlights some interesting ways to create one-of-a-kind items using some seriously easy design ideas.

Need a great gift idea? Simply pick up some reclaimed wood and craft your very own modern black-and-white coasters. Using painter’s tape, outline the edge of the wood, and then paint the middle white. Apply a couple of coats. Once the paint is dry, add your design. Think stripes, circles, rings, chevron pattern, checkered . . . I’ve even painted these with sports team logos. You will probably need two coats of black paint for the design. Add some felt pads and a black-and-white ribbon, and you’ll be the hit of any holiday or birthday party.
